More typographic city maps: Washington DC and New York

DC typographic map

(This is pretty much cross-posted from the Axis Maps blog.)

Just a quick promotional note in case I still have a remaining shred of dignity: a couple of weeks ago the fellas and I at Axis Maps launched a new store with two new typographic city maps. The Washington, DC map depicts most of the District with some surrounding areas, and the New York City map shows the whole of Manhattan as well as sections of adjacent boroughs and New Jersey cities. We’ve set up our own operation now and are stocked with offset prints, having graduated from Zazzle.

For a brief period there was also a limited edition letterpress print of San Francisco. It sold out in a few hours, much to our delight, but we’re currently thinking about future letterpress runs of this and other cities.

So in summary: now available are new typographic maps of New York and Washington, and all the rest (San Francisco, Chicago color and black & white, and Boston).

  1. Hey man. Stumbled upon your blog the other night while working on a flu-locator type app. Love the stuff you post about, even though I’m no cartographer myself. Came across it while searching “map typography.” Anyway, I appreciate the geekiness.

  2. I really enjoy these maps of yours. Any plans for any Canadian cities? Old Montreal and Vancouver would be good ones! Looks like you’re really refining your technique.

  3. Agreed, Montreal and Vancouver would be nice. No concrete plans for upcoming cities yet, but Canadian cities will certainly at least not be off the radar when we get around to deciding something!

  4. Wow, those are quite impressive. That must have taken some time to do. I had my parents buy the Boston map for me last Christmas. I absolutely love it.

I’m not a cartographer but I work with GIS. I would love to learn to make a map like that. I just wish I had the patience. haha
